OFC Review of John Mayer Battle Studies Summer Tour final show...
September 11, 2010, John Mayer turned the heat up at Cruzan Amphitheater in West Palm Beach ending his 2010 summer Battle Studies tour with a transitional and innovative performance demonstrating his virtuosity and versatility. Fans who attended a John Mayer show for the first time knowing just a few of his popular love songs left mesmerized by Mayer’s mind blowing guitar. After a riveting, flawless cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Machine Gun’ transitioning into ‘Voodoo Chile’ early in the setlist, it is evident that it is not by accident John Mayer made the short list line up at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival earlier this summer.
JM's vocals, guitar, creativity, cross genre variety, interaction with the audience, political awareness, sense of humor over his personal woes and the press, his healing of dissent between Miami and Cleveland over Lebron James by wearing a basketball jersey fashioned as half Miami and half Cleveland culminated in JM's honoring New York and the day in history not to be forgotten 9/11.
Transition and music innovations defined the set list as John Mayer and his band intermixed full covers of Hendrix classics and snippets of Simon and Garfunkel ‘Homeward Bound’, Otis Redding ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’, Sting ‘If You Love Somebody’ all transitioning to John Mayer classics including ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’, ‘Heartbreak Warfare’, ‘Gravity’, ‘Waiting on the World to Change’ and ‘Half of my Heart’.
The two and half hour show was filled with stellar blues, jazz, popular hits and screaming electric guitar. Supporting blues guitarist and vocalist David Ryan Harris kicked it up a notch. A fave moment was the jazz infusion hit ‘Wheel’ highlighted by JM’s guitar duo with soprano sax - spellbinding! John Mayer was on fire the last night of his tour and for Slowhand fans, posterity was witnessed in John Mayer who has defined himself as a living guitar great.
The 2010 North American Summer Tour kicked off on July 16th in Charlotte, NC. The two month tour visited amphitheaters across the US and Canada through early September, wrapping up in the southeast after a visit to the west coast. This followed a Winter Arena run and Spring International Tour in support of the latest release, Battle Studies.
As quoted in article from New York Times Music news “It’s crazy to me that in my head, that being 32 and dating women is going to get me in trouble”
