June 18, 2011. On the eve of Father's Day, Clarence Clemons, saxophone player of Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band, died at his home on Singer Island, Florida after suffering a stroke a week earlier. Clarence was 69 years old.
Bruce Springsteen gives tribute on brucespringsteen.net to the "Big Man," as Clarence was affectionately called, for his towering 6 foot 5 inch stature, powerful sax and kind heart.
Clarence had suffered with health issues following double knee replacement surgery. Despite his physical hardships, Clarence was able to perform with Lady Gaga on the season finale of American Idol in which he is featured in the album "Born This Way" including new video "The Edge of Glory." Throughout the month of May and into June, Clarence was showing promising progress of improvement up until the shocking news of his stroke last Sunday.
Clemons said in a 2010 interview with The Associated Press then that he was winning his battles - including severe, chronic pain and post-surgical depression. His sense of humor helped.
"Of all the surgeries I've had, there's not much left to operate on. I am totally bionic," he said.
"God will give you no more than you can handle," he said in the interview. "This is all a test to see if you are really ready for the good things that are going to come in your life. All this pain is going to come back and make me stronger."
